In Memoriam: Bro. Harry McGovern, OSFS
Bro. Harry F. McGovern, O.S.F.S., 73, died May 3, 2017, of respiratory failure. Bro. Harry professed his vows as an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales in 1964 after his graduation from Northeast Catholic High School two years earlier. He served his community and the church with joyful dedication.
“We Oblates are saddened at the death of our brother, Harry,” Fr. James Greenfield, OSFS, provincial, said. “Harry was famously kind and possessed a generous spirit. He was a joy to be around. We will really miss him.”
Bro. Harry served in a number of assignments, including as a cook at the Oblates’ retreat house and seminary; a Sunday school teacher, religious education director, and liturgy director at various parishes; and archivist.
Bro. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary. He is survived by his siblings, Mary, Frank, and Joe, and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 12, at 11 AM, at Our Lady of Light Chapel 1120 Blue Ball Road, Elkton, MD. A viewing will precede the mass at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow the mass at the Oblate Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory for retirement needs of the Oblate Development Fund, P.O. Box 87, Childs, MD 21916-0087.
