In Memoriam: Bro. John Dochkus, OSFS
Bro. John J. Dochkus, O.S.F.S., 69, died May 10, 2017, at his community’s home in Childs, Maryland. Bro. John professed his vows as an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales in 1968 after his graduation from Northeast Catholic High School two years earlier. He was inspired to be an Oblate brother by Bro. Arthur Kerns who taught him science at the Philadelphia school.
“We Oblates are stunned and saddened at the unexpected death of our brother, John,” Fr. James Greenfield, OSFS, provincial, said. “He served our community with a true selflessness, especially during the 23 years of caring for our infirm and senior priests and brothers at our retirement home. His generosity was inspirational.”
Bro. John ministered as a teacher at Salesianum School in Wilmington, DE; Bishop McDevitt High School Harrisburg, PA; and Northeast Catholic. He also served area churches as a liturgical musician.
Bro. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Patterson Dochkus. In addition to members of his religious community, he is survived by his sister, Carol, and nephew, Paul. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 16, at 11 AM, at Our Lady of Light Chapel 1120 Blue Ball Road, Elkton, MD. Visitation will precede the mass at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the mass at the Oblate Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory for retirement needs of the Oblate Development Fund, P.O.
