In Memoriam: Rev. Peter J. Harvey, OSFS

Reverend Peter J. Harvey, OSFS, a professed Oblate of St. Francis de Sales for 66 years died on July 14 at the home of his religious community in Childs, Maryland.

Fr. Harvey, son of the late John and Julia Harvey was born in Philadelphia in 1937.  He attended St. Martin of Tours School in Philadelphia, and after graduating from Northeast Catholic High School for Boys in 1949, he entered the Oblate Novitiate and made his first profession of vows in 1950.  Fr. Harvey earned a Bachelor of Arts inLatin and Greek from Niagara University.  He completed his studies for the priesthood at De Sales Hall in Washington, DC.  He was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1960 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Wilmington, Delaware by Bishop Michael W. Hyle.

Following ordination, Fr. Harvey taught at Father Judge High School, Philadelphia, and DeSales High School, Lockport, New York.  Fr. Harvey was assigned to the Oblate Missions in South Africa where he served as pastor of Holy Rosary Church in O’Kiep, St. Odilon Church in Riemvasmaak, Christ Our King Church, Kamieskroon, St. Peter Claver Church in Calvinia, and as associate pastor at St. John Church in Kiemoes.  He served twice in the missions, from 1963-1997, and from 2000-2004.

Upon returned to the United States, Father Harvey ministered as chaplain at Einstein Hospital and Holy Redeemer Hospital in Philadelphia.  He retired to Annecy Hall, Childs, MD, in 2006.

In addition to his Oblate religious community, Fr. Harvey is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Light Chapel, 1120 Blue Ball Road, Elkton, Maryland, on Wednesday, July 19, at 11 AM.  Visitation will precede the mass beginning at 9:30 AM.  Interment will follow at the Oblate Community Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Oblate Development Fund for retirement are requested: 2200 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE, 19806.
