Indian Region: De Sales Academy Sports Achievements

In 2024, De Sales Academy in Chandapura, India, administered by the Oblates, achieved national recognition in athletics. For 13 years, the Academy has provided low- to middle-class students with sports opportunities, fostering leadership, collaboration, resilience, and discipline for future success.

The Academy’s karate team consistently achieves national recognition, showcasing their commitment to fostering athletes’ skills and deep dedication to martial arts. Additionally, their Rugby team recently reached state-level recognition. Fr. Johnson Mathew, OSFS, India’s Regional Superior, noted this recognition demonstrates teamwork, physical strength, and strategic thinking during game time. Lastly, their basketball team also earned state-level recognition, emphasizing sportsmanship and collaboration on and off the court.

Fr. Mathew expressed immense pride for the Academy and the students on each team for reaching such recognition. Each team received medals for their efforts, tangible evidence of their hard work that they get to keep forever. This builds confidence in the students and makes them feel seen. “We are very much proud of our small institution and all our students for competing with the big giant groups. It's hard work for the many staff and students, but we are very much proud of every single one,” he said.

“Giving a child the opportunity and access to an environment that promotes self-worth, confidence, and overall well-being is the best foundation for a brighter future,” said Fr. Johnson. These values are at the center of the De Sales Academy's mission. Engaging in such competitions helps students build confidence and develop important life skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

De Sales Academy is working to expand its efforts and open a new location to reach more students in need of a quality education and a safe environment to grow their knowledge and spirit.
