A Legacy of Salesian Leadership - Fr. Geoff Rose, OSFS

In Part 1 of “A Legacy of Salesian Leadership” the Oblates highlight Fr. Geoff Rose, OSFS. Fr. Rose recently concluded his ministry as president of St. Francis de Sales School in Toledo, Ohio. The Oblates gratefully celebrate his leadership, friendship, dedication, and enduring Salesian spirit.

Fr. Geoff Rose concludes eleven years of leadership as president of St. Francis de Sales School in Toledo, Ohio. Since arriving on campus in 2013, he has strengthened the school’s foundation, expanded its mission, and helped shape a culture of discipleship and Salesian leadership that will continue to influence generations of students.

Among the most significant developments during Fr. Rose’s presidency was the introduction, integration, and remarkable growth of grades seven and eight, combined with healthy and stable high school enrollment. The expansion broadened the reach of the school’s mission and created a seamless pathway for students to experience Salesian education and formation from middle school through graduation.

Fr. Rose conceived and implemented the Salesian Leadership Initiative, a comprehensive formation program built upon the pillars of humble confidence, authentic relationships, and servant leadership. Designed to help students embrace the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales as a way of life, the initiative challenges young people to grow as leaders, disciples, and servant-hearted members of their communities. The program has become a defining element of the student experience and now reaches every student in the school.

A hallmark of Fr. Rose’s leadership has been his conviction that Catholic schools should serve not only their own students, but also the broader community—“to be a resource to the community,” as he often put it. Reflecting the unitive spirit of St. Francis de Sales, he consistently sought opportunities to collaborate rather than compete. Under his leadership, St. Francis de Sales increasingly became a resource for educators, school leaders, and students throughout Northwest Ohio. The Global Salesian Leadership Symposium, founded as part of the Salesian Leadership Initiative, now welcomes hundreds of students from public, private, and Catholic schools each year, extending the influence of Salesian leadership formation far beyond the school’s campus.

Throughout his presidency, Fr. Rose emphasized that the mission of a Catholic school extends beyond academic excellence. Under his leadership, St. Francis strengthened its focus on discipleship, mentorship, and faith formation, helping students encounter Christ through authentic relationships and preparing them to lead lives of faith, service, and purpose.

His dedication to academic excellence also led to the creation of the Center for Advanced Scientific Exploration, transforming both the physical space and the way science is taught through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning.

This commitment to forming lifelong disciples was recognized nationally when Fr. Rose received the National Catholic Educational Association’s Lead. Learn. Proclaim. Award. Reflecting on his confrere’s ministry, Fr. Joe Newman, OSFS, Provincial of the Toledo-Wilmington Province, remarked: “In this era where evangelization flourishes through authentic relationships, Fr. Rose’s leadership offers a dynamic and deeply relational approach to forming lifelong disciples.”

Most recently, Fr. Rose launched the $26 million campus improvement project through Our Faithful Loyalty: The 75th Anniversary Campaign. Under his leadership, the school strengthened its financial position through the growth of reserve funds, reduction of debt, and sustained philanthropic support, ensuring a strong foundation for future generations of students.

Fr. Rose will remain actively involved in the mission of St. Francis de Sales School through the ongoing work of the Salesian Leadership Initiative, the Global Salesian Leadership Symposium, and the Jamaica Mission.

The Oblates are deeply grateful for Fathers Rose and Beretta and the legacy they leave behind. Their vision, leadership, and commitment to forming young people in the Salesian tradition will continue to bear fruit for generations. Their greatest legacy is found in the countless lives they have touched and the communities they have strengthened.

May God be Praised!
