Mr. Chris Allen enjoying a boat ride

Earlier this year, the youth at Holy Family Parish in Adrian, MI spent an afternoon fishing with Fr. Tom Helfrich, OSFS.

Our Novice Director, Fr. Tom Helfrich, OSFS, is well known for his love of the outdoors. He often draws from this passion to create meaningful formational experiences for our novice, Chris Allen. His most recent lesson is one I didn’t know I needed!

Fr. Tom took Chris fishing for an afternoon. For those who enjoy fishing, this probably sounds like an ideal day. For others, myself included, the thought of sitting still in a boat for hours can be a challenge. I love being outdoors, but I like to keep moving!

Fr. Tom’s insight was simple and profound: You can spend all afternoon wishing you were somewhere else, OR you can spend the afternoon being exactly where you are, in the boat. Be in the boat.

This is a deeply Salesian invitation, living in the present moment. Now, here, this is where we encounter God, ourselves, and others. I’ve tried to practice this teaching for years, especially when the moment feels uncomfortable or boring. I simply remind myself of God’s presence in moments that rub against my will.

But here is what is new for me: I also need to stay in the boat during the moments I actually enjoy. Having breakfast with my parents — no need to start planning my to-do list. Sharing community with the Oblates in the evening — no need to check my email again. Gathering for prayer before dinner — no need to plan my evening workout.

The lesson is simple but challenging: wherever you are, whether the moment is easy or difficult, stay in the boat. God is already there.
